Case IH 19439 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Shutoff condition due to an active two mass fly wheel resonance
Issue description
The Engine Control Module intentionally shuts off the engine if the engine speed falls below a defined minimum safety threshold (typically during heavy braking without clutching or lugging) to avoid severe vibrations and resonances that could damage the Two-Mass Flywheel.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Tier 4b
- Case IH agricultural tractors
- Case CE construction equipment
- N-Series Loader Backhoes
Check the cause
Confirm driving conditions with the operator to determine if the machine was stalled, braked heavily without clutching, or lugged down to an extremely low RPM
Check the ECM history to see if this fault status reoccurs frequently
Check the engine speed acquisition data via the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) for erratic readings from the Engine Speed Sensor that might trick the ECU into a false stall reading
Listen for abnormal rattling, clunking, or heavy vibrations coming from the bellhousing area during startup or shutdown, which indicates the Two-Mass Flywheel has suffered mechanical damage
Repair steps
Clear the Code
Connect the Case IH EST diagnostic tool and clear the fault code from the ECM memory.
Operator Education
Advise the operator on proper driving techniques—specifically, ensuring the clutch is depressed during heavy braking to prevent the engine RPM from dropping below the resonance threshold.
Address Secondary Faults
If the engine speed sensor was found to be dropping the signal (causing a false stall reading), replace the engine speed sensor.
Flywheel Replacement
If the TMFW is making excessive noise or has failed the mechanical deflection test, the tractor must be split at the bellhousing to replace the flywheel assembly.
Parts you might need
(2)Two-Mass Flywheel (TMFW)
OEM Part Number varies by specific machine model. Replace only if physical damage/failure is present.
Engine Speed Sensor (Crankshaft Position Sensor)
OEM Part Number varies by specific machine model. Replace only if diagnostic data shows the sensor is dropping the RPM signal.
