Case IH 19448 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Fault Check for enhanced SRC-Max of sixth exhaust gas temperature

Issue description

This code indicates an out-of-range or implausible temperature reading from the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGTS) located in the aftertreatment system. Specifically, it points to the sixth temperature monitoring position, which is typically located near the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) or SCR catalyst.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Farmall
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Optum
  • Magnum
  • Quantum
  • Vestrum
  • N-Series Tractor Loader Backhoes

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the sensor, wiring harness, and connectors for excessive corrosion, melting, abnormal twisting, or loosening

  2. Unplug the sensor and clean the connector thoroughly to remove any grease, dust, or moisture that could cause a short or open circuit

  3. Perform a voltage test with the key on (engine off) to verify a 5-volt reference signal at the sensor connector on the harness side

  4. Test the resistance of the sensor using a multimeter; an open circuit (infinite resistance) or dead short indicates internal sensor failure

  5. Inspect the exhaust piping around the sensor bung for soot trails, which indicate an exhaust leak that could skew temperature readings

Repair steps

  1. Cool Down

Allow the engine and exhaust system to cool completely. Exhaust components reach extreme temperatures during operation and regeneration.

  2. Disconnect

Locate the faulty EGT sensor in the exhaust stream (near the DPF/SCR) and carefully unplug its electrical connector.

  3. Removal

Use a sensor socket or wrench to unscrew the sensor from the exhaust bung. If it is seized, penetrating oil may be required.

  4. Preparation

Apply a high-temperature anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor to prevent future seizing (ensure no anti-seize gets on the sensor probe itself).

  5. Installation

Thread the new sensor into the exhaust system and tighten it to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector back into the engine wiring harness.

  7. Clear Codes

Use the Case IH AFS Service Tool (or a compatible heavy-duty diagnostic scanner) to clear the passive/active fault codes. Run the engine to operating temperature to verify the code does not return.
