Case IH 19461 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC): Over-boost failure in engine brake mode
Issue description
This condition occurs when the engine's control system detects that the turbocharger boost pressure is exceeding the maximum allowable threshold while the engine brake (exhaust brake or decompression system) is actively engaged. During engine braking, the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) and the exhaust flap restrict exhaust flow to create backpressure. If the VGT vanes stick in a closed position or the exhaust flap malfunctions, it can cause an over-boost condition.

Check the cause
Verify Sensor Readings: Use a diagnostic tool (like Case IH EST) to monitor the Intake Manifold Boost Pressure Sensor (MAP) and Exhaust Gas Pressure Sensor with the engine off. They should read atmospheric pressure. If the boost sensor reads artificially high, the sensor is skewed.
VGT Actuator Sweep Test: Use the diagnostic software to command the VGT actuator through its full range of motion. Listen for smooth operation and watch for binding or hesitation.
Exhaust Brake Flap Inspection: If the engine is equipped with an external exhaust brake flap, visually inspect the linkage for physical damage, binding, or heavy soot accumulation.
Wiring and Harness Check: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the VGT actuator and the boost pressure sensor for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.
Repair steps
Clean or Replace the Boost Pressure Sensor
Locate the boost pressure sensor on the intake manifold. Remove it and inspect the tip for heavy soot or carbon buildup. Clean it carefully with sensor-safe solvent. If the sensor was reading out of range during the diagnostic check, replace it.
Inspect the Turbocharger Sector Gear
If the VGT actuator failed the sweep test, remove the electronic actuator from the turbocharger. Manually move the sector gear on the turbocharger by hand.
Address Binding
If the sector gear moves freely, the electronic VGT actuator has failed internally and must be replaced. If the sector gear is seized or extremely stiff, the turbocharger vanes are jammed with carbon/soot. The turbocharger will need to be removed and either cleaned (if permitted by OEM guidelines) or replaced.
Service the Exhaust Brake
If the VGT is functioning normally, inspect the exhaust brake flap assembly in the exhaust stream. Clean any carbon buildup preventing the flap from opening fully. Replace the exhaust brake assembly if the internal butterfly valve is mechanically damaged.
Calibrate and Clear
After replacing the VGT actuator or turbocharger, use the diagnostic tool to perform a VGT calibration procedure. Clear the 19461 fault code and test drive the machine, engaging the engine brake under load to verify the repair.
