Case IH 19461 (DTC 1B48) – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Overboost failure in engine brake mode
Issue description
This condition occurs when the engine's intake manifold boost pressure exceeds the maximum allowable limit while the engine brake is actively engaged. During engine braking, exhaust flow is restricted to create backpressure and slow the engine. If the restriction mechanism sticks or the boost sensor reads incorrectly, the system detects a dangerous overboost condition that could damage the engine.

Check the cause
Perform a sensor plausibility check on the Boost Pressure Sensor (MAP sensor) with the engine off to ensure it matches atmospheric pressure
Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the boost pressure sensor for chafing, corrosion, or a short circuit to ground
Inspect the turbocharger wastegate or Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) actuator linkage for binding or sticking caused by soot and carbon buildup
Check the engine brake mechanism (exhaust brake flap) to ensure it is not physically seized in the restricted position
Repair steps
Verify Sensor Accuracy
Turn the key ON (engine OFF). Read the boost pressure value. If it reads significantly higher than atmospheric pressure, replace the Boost Pressure Sensor.
Inspect and Free Linkages
If the sensor is functioning correctly, locate the turbocharger. Disconnect the actuator linkage for the wastegate or VGT. Move the lever by hand; it should move freely.
Clean or Replace Turbo Components
If the VGT lever or wastegate is seized due to heavy carbon/soot buildup, attempt to clean the mechanism with appropriate exhaust/carbon solvents. If the internal vanes are permanently seized or damaged, the turbocharger assembly must be replaced.
Check Actuator Function
If the mechanical lever moves freely but the electronic actuator does not command it properly during engine braking, replace the VGT actuator.
Clear and Test
Clear the fault codes from the Engine ECU. Perform a test drive under load, actively engaging the engine brake to ensure the boost pressure regulates correctly and the code does not return.
