Case IH 19464 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Camshaft Position Sensor (G40): Signal Out of Range

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is receiving an implausible signal, an out-of-tolerance signal, or no signal from the Camshaft Position Sensor, meaning the ECU cannot properly verify the synchronization between the camshaft and the crankshaft.

   Verify diagnostic scanner compatibility with CNH/Case IH software to rule out a false code definition

   Monitor live data for both the Crankshaft (Engine Speed) and Camshaft sensors

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors for the camshaft sensor for damage, corrosion, or loose contacts (especially chafing near the starter motor)

   Verify the engine's mechanical timing to ensure a timing belt or gear has not jumped a tooth

   Clear and Retest

   Clear the fault memory and attempt to start the engine to see if the code is intermittent or hard-set.

   Inspect and Repair Wiring

   Strip back the wiring loom leading to the camshaft position sensor. Test for continuity back to the ECU. Repair any broken, shorted, or corroded wires.

   Verify Camshaft/Crankshaft Synchronization

   Inspect the position of the camshaft and the sensor rotor. If the engine timing is off, re-time the engine according to the manufacturer's service manual.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the wiring is intact and the mechanical engine timing is perfectly aligned, the sensor itself has failed internally and must be replaced.
