Case IH 19466 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC): Counter for the Engine speed monitoring

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is detecting an anomaly in the engine speed signal. The ECU uses a counter to monitor the pulses coming from the engine speed sensor (crankshaft position sensor) and/or the camshaft position sensor. If the counter detects missing pulses, an erratic signal, or a mismatch between the crank and cam sensors, it logs this code.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the engine speed (crankshaft) sensor for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Remove the engine speed sensor and check the magnetic tip for metal shavings or debris that can distort the signal and cause missed pulses.

   Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the sensor and verify continuity from the sensor connector back to the Engine ECU pins.

   Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and monitor the 'Engine Speed' parameter while cranking and running the engine to look for sudden drop-outs or erratic RPM spikes.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the engine speed sensor (crankshaft position sensor), which is typically mounted on the flywheel housing or near the front crankshaft pulley depending on the specific FPT engine model (4.5L, 6.7L, or 8.7L).

   Remove the Sensor

   Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the retaining bolt (usually a 10mm or Allen head) and carefully pull the sensor straight out of its bore.

   Clean the Port

   Wipe the mounting surface and the sensor bore clean. Ensure no dirt falls into the engine.

   Install the New Sensor

   Insert the new OEM speed sensor. Install and tighten the retaining bolt to the manufacturer's torque specification (do not overtighten, as the plastic housing can crack).

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back in until it clicks, and reconnect the battery.

   Clear Codes

   Use the CNH EST diagnostic tool to clear the 19466 fault code from the Engine ECU memory, then start the tractor to verify the repair.
