Case IH 19472 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): Short circuit to ground error at the High Side of Exhaust flap powerstage
Issue description
The control module has detected a short circuit to ground on the high-voltage side of the electrical circuit that supplies power to the exhaust flap actuator.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- Tier 4b
- Case IH Vestrum
- Case IH Maxxum
- Case IH Puma
- Case IH Optum
- Case IH Magnum
- Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the exhaust flap actuator for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched lines that could cause the high-side power wire to short against the chassis ground.
Disconnect the exhaust flap actuator and measure resistance across pins 4 and 5. It should measure approximately 60 Ω. If resistance is incorrect or shows continuity to ground, the internal actuator motor is shorted.
Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or PT-Box to check for accompanying engine CAN faults (e.g., ECU2FLP), as a shorted actuator can pull down network voltages.
Check the exhaust flap actuator for signs of severe overheating or physical binding, which can cause internal circuitry to fail.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the machine, disconnect the battery, and allow the engine and exhaust system to cool completely.
Drain Coolant
Drain the engine coolant to prevent spills, as the actuator has coolant lines routed to it.
Disconnect Components
Disconnect the electrical connector and the coolant lines from the exhaust flap actuator.
Remove the Valve
Remove the V-band clamps or fastening nuts securing the exhaust flap to the turbocharger outlet and the exhaust front pipe/DOC frame.
Install New Valve
Position the new exhaust flap valve assembly and secure it with the exhaust clamps/hardware.
Reconnect
Reconnect the engine coolant lines and the electrical connector.
Refill Fluids
Refill the engine cooling system with the specified coolant and bleed any air from the system.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, use the CNH EST to clear the 19472 fault code, and perform a stationary warm-up test to verify the flap operates correctly without throwing a code.
