Case IH 19482 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Fault check for cold start condition of exhaust-gas temperature sensor 5
Issue description
Indicates a plausibility failure detected during a cold start. The engine control system compares the temperature readings of various sensors (such as ambient air, coolant, and exhaust gas temperatures) when the engine is cold. If Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor 5 reports a value that is significantly out of range or implausible compared to the other sensors (e.g., reading hot when the engine has been sitting overnight), the system flags this code.

Check the cause
Verify Cold Start Plausibility: Connect a diagnostic scanner, let the machine sit until completely cold, and read live data for all temperature sensors. EGT Sensor 5 should read roughly the same as ambient and coolant temperatures.
Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Check the wiring harness leading to EGT Sensor 5 for chafing, melting, or rodent damage. Disconnect and inspect pins for corrosion or water intrusion.
Check System Voltage: Ensure battery voltage is within specification, as abnormal voltage can cause false sensor readings.
Repair steps
Safety First
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and allow the exhaust system to cool completely to avoid severe burns. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Locate Sensor 5
Locate Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 5. In FPT Tier 4 / Stage V aftertreatment systems, Sensor 5 is typically located downstream in the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) or DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) assembly.
Disconnect the Sensor
Unplug the electrical connector for EGT Sensor 5 from the main engine harness.
Remove the Sensor
Apply penetrating oil to the threads of the sensor where it threads into the exhaust pipe. Carefully use a sensor socket or wrench to unscrew the sensor.
Install the New Sensor
Apply a small amount of high-temperature anti-seize to the threads of the new sensor (avoid getting any on the sensor probe itself). Thread it into the exhaust pipe and tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back in until it clicks. Reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes
Use your diagnostic scan tool to clear the 19482 fault code. Start the engine and monitor the live data for EGT Sensor 5 to ensure it is now reading correctly and scaling up as the exhaust heats up.
