Case IH 19483 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Fault check for cold start condition of exhaust-gas temperature sensor 6.

Issue description

During a cold start, the engine control system runs a plausibility check on the exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensors. It compares the temperature readings of the sensors against the ambient temperature and against each other. If EGT Sensor 6 reports a temperature that is completely out of range or implausible for a cold engine state, the system logs this fault code. This typically indicates a biased sensor, a failed sensor element, or a wiring issue.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Cold Start Data: Connect a diagnostic tool and monitor live data for all EGT sensors on a completely cold engine. EGT Sensor 6 should read roughly the same as ambient temperature and other EGT sensors.

  2. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to EGT Sensor 6 for chafed wires, melted insulation, or physical damage.

  3. Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor's 2-pin Bosch plug and check for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins.

  4. Electrical Testing: Use a multimeter to check sensor resistance and harness continuity to the ECM, ensuring no short-to-ground or open circuits.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Ensure the machine is parked on a level surface, the engine is turned off, and the exhaust system is completely cold to prevent severe burns. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate EGT Sensor 6 on the exhaust aftertreatment pipe (downstream in the DPF/SCR system).

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the 2-pin electrical connector from the sensor harness.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Using a suitable wrench, carefully unscrew the sensor from the exhaust pipe. Note: Exhaust sensors are prone to seizing. If it is stuck, apply penetrating oil to the M14x1.5 threads and allow it to soak before attempting removal to avoid stripping the exhaust bung.

  5. Prepare the New Sensor

    Apply a small amount of high-temperature anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (if it does not already come pre-coated from the factory). Do not get anti-seize on the sensor probe itself.

  6. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new sensor into the exhaust bung by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the 2-pin electrical connector back into the machine's wiring harness.

  8. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and use your diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 19483 fault code. Start the engine and monitor the live data for EGT Sensor 6 to ensure it rises smoothly and plausibly as the exhaust heats up.
