Case IH 19488 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): Fuel quantity Balancing Control correction quantities at limitation for injector in cylinder 3
Issue description
The engine control system has detected a severe power contribution imbalance from a specific cylinder. The required fuel correction amount exceeds the maximum allowable limit programmed into the ECU for a set period, meaning the ECU can no longer compensate for the cylinder's poor performance.

Check the cause
Perform a relative compression test to verify cylinder compression is within spec, as low mechanical compression will cause the ECU to over-fuel to compensate.
Perform an injector return flow (leak-off) test to check for excessively high return flow, indicating internal injector wear or a blown seal.
Inspect the injector wiring harness for chafing, shorts to ground, and verify continuity between the injector terminals and the ECU pins.
Check the fuel filter for water or severe contamination that could damage injector nozzles and alter spray patterns.
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Ensure the engine is off and the high-pressure common rail system has fully depressurized.
Access the Injector
Remove the engine valve cover or injector dust cover (depending on the specific FPT engine displacement).
Remove Fuel Lines
Disconnect the high-pressure fuel line running from the common rail to the affected injector. Cap the rail fitting immediately to prevent debris from entering the system. Disconnect the low-pressure return line.
Extract the Injector
Disconnect the electrical harness. Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully pull the injector from the cylinder head.
Clean the Bore
Thoroughly clean the injector bore. Crucial: Ensure the old copper sealing washer is removed from the bottom of the bore and not stuck in place.
Install New Injector
Place a new copper crush washer on the new injector. Insert it into the bore and torque the hold-down clamp to the exact OEM specification.
Reassemble
Reconnect the fuel return line and install the high-pressure line (leaving the injector side slightly loose to bleed air if required by the manual, though many modern systems self-prime). Torque all fittings.
IMA Coding
Use a diagnostic scan tool to program the new injector's IMA (Injector Adjustment) alphanumeric code into the Engine ECU. This calibrates the ECU to the specific flow characteristics of the new injector.
Clear and Test
Clear the 19488 fault code, start the engine, and monitor the FBC correction values in the live data to ensure they have returned to a normal, balanced range.
