Case IH 19489 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fuel Quantity Balancing Control (FBC) Maximum or Minimum Correction Limit Reached (Cylinder 4)

Issue description

The Fuel Quantity Balancing Control (FBC) system has reached its maximum or minimum correction limit for Cylinder 4. This typically points to a failing fuel injector (micro-dosage loss, worn nozzle, or solenoid fault), poor cylinder compression, or a localized fuel delivery issue.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying codes: Ensure there are no active codes for crankshaft/camshaft synchronization or rail pressure, as these can disable the Fuel Balancing Control system and cause false readings.

  2. Perform an injector balance/contribution test: Use a diagnostic scanner to read live injector balance rates and verify which cylinder is deviating from the baseline.

  3. Inspect fuel quality: Check for water in the fuel or contamination, which can damage the injector internals.

  4. Perform a mechanical compression test: Verify cylinder compression, as worn piston rings or leaking valves will cause low power contribution, forcing the ECU to max out fuel correction.

  5. Check wiring and solenoid: Inspect the injector wiring harness for shorts or open circuits, and verify the injector solenoid resistance.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Disconnect the battery. Clean the area around the fuel rail and valve cover to prevent debris from entering the engine.

  2. Disassembly

    Remove the tappet covers/valve covers and any obstructing intake or exhaust manifolds as required by your specific engine model.

  3. Line Removal

    Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel delivery pipe connecting the fuel rail to the faulty injector.

  4. Injector Removal

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the injector. Unscrew the injector support fastening screws/clamps and carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head.

  5. Cleaning and Installation

    Clean the injector bore thoroughly. Install the new injector using a new copper sealing washer. Torque the hold-down clamp to the OEM specification.

  6. Reassembly

    Reinstall the high-pressure fuel line, electrical connections, and valve covers.

  7. IMA/IQA Coding

    You must use a diagnostic scanner to program the new injector's IMA (Injector Quantity Adjustment) code into the ECU. This code is usually stamped on the top of the new injector. Failure to program this code will result in improper fuel delivery and further balancing faults.

  8. Bleed and Test

    Prime the fuel system, clear the fault codes, and run the engine to verify that the balance rates have returned to normal.
