Case IH 19490 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: Fuel quantity Balancing Control correction quantities at limitation

The Engine Control Module (ECM) constantly monitors the crankshaft speed to ensure smooth engine operation. When the required correction exceeds the maximum allowable limit (typically > ±4.0 mm³/stroke), the ECM triggers this fault code. This indicates that the injector is likely sticking, leaking, clogged, or that the cylinder has a mechanical compression issue.

   Check ECM Software (MSW version) to ensure it is up to date, as overly sensitive software can trigger false balancing codes

   Perform a live cylinder balance test using a diagnostic scan tool at operating temperature (coolant > 140°F / 60°C)

   Verify fuel supply to ensure there are no restrictions, clogged fuel filters, or air in the fuel lines causing erratic balancing rates

   Check for related active Crankshaft Position Sensor or Camshaft Position Sensor codes, as a disturbed signal disables Fuel Balancing Control

   Perform a relative or manual compression test on cylinder 6 to rule out mechanical engine issues (like worn rings or valves) before condemning the injector

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the area around the cylinder 6 injector to prevent dirt from entering the engine or fuel system.

   Remove Lines

   Disconnect and remove the high-pressure fuel line and the low-pressure return line connected to the injector.

   Remove Retainer

   Remove the injector hold-down bolt and clamp/retainer.

   Extract the Injector

   Carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head. Because they are friction-fit, a slide hammer or special OEM puller may be required if the injector is stuck.

   Clean the Bore

   Clean the injector bore in the cylinder head, ensuring no old copper washer material is left behind.

   Install New Injector

   Install the new injector using a new copper sealing washer and new O-rings.

   Torque to Spec

   Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to the exact OEM specifications.

   Reinstall Lines

   Reconnect the fuel return line and install a new high-pressure fuel line (high-pressure common rail lines are generally single-use).

   Program the Injector

   Use the diagnostic scan tool to program the new injector's trim code (IQA code) into the ECM and reset the cylinder balancing adaptations.
