Case IH 19493 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Water level sensor voltage is higher than expected

Issue description

This code indicates an electrical fault in the Water in Fuel (WIF) sensor circuit, which monitors the fuel filter/water separator for moisture. The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the sensor that exceeds the normal operating range. This typically points to an open circuit, a disconnected sensor plug, a broken wire, or a short to a high-voltage source (such as battery voltage).

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the primary fuel filter/water separator and check the WIF sensor plugged into the bottom of the bowl. Ensure the connector is not simply unplugged or loose.

  2. Wiring Harness Check: Inspect the wiring leading to the sensor for chafing, breaks, or corrosion. A broken wire will cause an open circuit, driving the voltage reading high.

  3. Drain the Separator: Drain the fuel filter water separator to ensure the housing isn't completely saturated with water or algae, which can sometimes skew sensor readings.

  4. Circuit Testing: Use a multimeter to verify the reference voltage at the connector and check for continuity back to the ECM.

  5. Fuse Check: Verify that no fuses related to the engine sensor circuit are blown.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off machine and disconnect battery

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate filter assembly

    Locate the primary fuel filter/water separator assembly.

  3. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the WIF sensor at the bottom of the filter.

  4. Drain filter housing

    Place a catch pan underneath and open the drain valve to empty the fuel/water from the filter housing to prevent spills.

  5. Remove faulty sensor

    Unscrew the faulty WIF sensor from the bottom of the filter housing.

  6. Install new sensor

    Install the new sensor, ensuring the sealing O-ring is properly seated. Note: Hand-tighten only. Using heavy tools can crack the plastic sensor body or strip the threads.

  7. Apply dielectric grease and reconnect

    Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the electrical terminals to prevent future moisture corrosion, then reconnect the harness.

  8. Prime fuel system

    Prime the fuel system to remove any introduced air.

  9. Reconnect battery and clear code

    Reconnect the battery, start the machine, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault code.
