Case IH 19496 – DCU (Dosing Control Unit): Urea pressure sensor plausibility error (checked during system start-up) / Reagent - pressure - above threshold
Issue description
When the machine's system powers up, the control unit checks the DEF (Urea) pressure sensor before the pump is commanded to build pressure. The sensor is reporting a pressure value that is higher than the acceptable threshold (plausibility failure). This indicates that either the sensor has failed internally, there is an electrical short causing a falsely high reading, or there is actual residual pressure trapped in the line due to a blockage or frozen fluid.

Check the cause
Check for related electrical codes (19046, 19047, or 19048) which indicate direct electrical faults on the Urea pressure sensor circuit
Inspect the DEF dosing lines (especially the backflow/return line) for physical damage, kinks, or clogs that could trap pressure
Verify if the DEF fluid is frozen or if the DEF line heaters have failed, which can cause trapped pressure during cold weather start-ups
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the DCU and the DEF pump module for corrosion, moisture, or chafing
Using a diagnostic tool, monitor the DEF pressure sensor voltage/reading with the key on and engine off (it should read zero or atmospheric pressure)
Repair steps
Safety First
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to ensure safety and prevent short circuits.
Relieve Pressure & Inspect Lines
Carefully disconnect the DEF supply and return lines to relieve any trapped pressure. Clear any blockages or replace clogged lines.
Inspect Connectors
Disconnect the electrical connector at the DEF pump module/dosing unit. Inspect for water intrusion or corroded pins. Clean and apply dielectric grease if necessary.
Test Wiring
Test the wiring harness for continuity back to the DCU to ensure there are no shorts to ground or power.
Replace the Sensor/Module
If the wiring and lines are clear, the issue is an internal failure of the DEF pressure sensor. Because the pressure sensor is typically integrated into the DEF pump module or DEF head unit, the entire module/head unit usually must be replaced.
Service the System
While the system is open, replace the DEF filter.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Install the new components, reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool, and run a system test to verify the pressure reads correctly and the code does not return.
