Case IH 19497 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Open load error for Water in Fuel Lamp powerstage
Issue description
The control module has detected an open circuit (no electrical current draw) on the output circuit (powerstage) that drives the "Water in Fuel" (WIF) warning lamp on the dashboard. The controller is attempting to send power to illuminate the warning light, but the circuit is broken, disconnected, or the bulb itself is burnt out.

Check the cause
Turn the ignition key to the ON position (engine OFF) and observe the instrument cluster. The Water in Fuel lamp should illuminate briefly during the self-test. If it does not, the bulb is likely burnt out.
Check the cab fuse box for any blown fuses related to the instrument cluster or diagnostic tell-tale lamps.
Check for missing continuity or an open circuit in the wiring harness between the ECM output pin and the instrument cluster connector.
Inspect the connectors at both the ECM and the instrument cluster for loose, backed-out, or corroded pins.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical shorts.
Inspect the Lamp
Remove the instrument cluster panel to access the warning lamps. Test the Water in Fuel lamp bulb. If it is blown, replace it. (Note: If your machine uses a sealed cluster with soldered LEDs, proceed to wiring checks first. If the LED is failed, the cluster may require professional repair).
Isolate the Circuit
Disconnect the harness connector at the ECM and the corresponding connector at the instrument cluster.
Test the Harness
Using a digital multimeter, perform a continuity test on the specific wire connecting the ECM's WIF lamp driver pin to the instrument cluster.
Repair Wiring
If the multimeter shows an open line (OL), trace the harness to locate the break or chafed wire and repair it using appropriate weatherproof splices. Ensure connector pins are seated tightly.
Reassemble
Reconnect the instrument cluster and ECM harnesses. Reconnect the battery.
Verify Repair
Turn the ignition key to the ON position and verify the Water in Fuel lamp illuminates during the initial bulb check.
Clear Codes
Use a diagnostic service tool to clear the 19497 fault code from the ECM and verify it does not return.
