Case IH 19498 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Instrument Cluster / Cab Controller: Over temperature error, Water in Fuel Lamp powerstage
Issue description
The control module has detected an excessive temperature condition within the internal powerstage (the electronic driver circuit) that supplies power to the Water in Fuel (WIF) warning lamp on the dashboard. This is typically caused by excessive current draw on the circuit, which forces the driver chip to overheat due to a short circuit in the wiring, a shorted bulb, or a failing instrument cluster/ECM driver.

Check the cause
Turn the ignition key to the ON position without starting the engine and observe the Water in Fuel lamp to see if it illuminates during the self-test (a non-illuminating bulb may indicate a short or disabled circuit).
Inspect the wiring harness running from the instrument cluster to the ECM for pinched wires, chafing against the chassis, or melted insulation that could cause a short to ground.
Disconnect the Water in Fuel sensor located at the bottom of the primary fuel filter/water separator and check if the code changes status (e.g., to an open circuit code) to rule out a dead-shorted sensor.
Using a multimeter, measure the resistance of the WIF lamp circuit from the module connector to the dash; unusually low resistance indicates a short.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent further damage to the control module's powerstage.
Access the Indicator
Remove the instrument cluster bezel or dash panel to access the warning lamps.
Inspect/Replace the Lamp
If the WIF lamp uses a replaceable incandescent bulb, remove it and inspect it. A collapsed filament can cause a direct short. Replace the bulb if suspect. (If it is a soldered LED on a printed circuit board, proceed to step 4).
Repair Wiring
If the bulb is good, trace the specific wire for the WIF lamp back to the control module. Repair any sections of the wire that are chafed or shorting against the machine's frame using heat-shrink tubing and electrical tape.
Module Assessment
If the wiring tests perfectly and the bulb is not shorted, the internal powerstage inside the ECM or Instrument Cluster is likely permanently damaged from a previous short. The module will need to be sent out for repair or replaced.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and use an electronic service tool (like the CNH EST) to clear the inactive 19498 fault code. Verify the WIF lamp illuminates normally during the key-on bulb check and turns off once the engine is running.
