Case IH 19500 – Engine Control Module (ECM/ECU): Short circuit to ground error, Water in Fuel Lamp powerstage

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the electrical circuit (the "powerstage" or driver circuit) responsible for illuminating the "Water in Fuel" warning lamp on the dashboard has shorted to ground. Instead of the voltage flowing through the lamp to complete the circuit, it is finding a premature path to the chassis ground, which prevents the lamp from functioning correctly and triggers the fault code.

Check the cause

  1. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position, disconnect the engine harness from the ECM, and disconnect the pigtail connector at the Water-in-Fuel (WIF) sensor.

  2. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance between the WIF sensor SIGNAL pin in the engine harness ECM connector and a solid chassis ground.

  3. Test the specific wire running from the ECM output pin to the instrument cluster lamp for continuity to ground.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness between the fuel filter, the ECM, and the cab firewall for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or rubbing against the engine block or frame.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Battery

    Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Locate the Short

    Based on the diagnostic checks, trace the specific wire showing a short to ground.

  3. Repair the Wiring Harness

    If a chafed or bare wire is found, cut out the damaged section. Solder in a new section of wire of the same gauge and seal it with marine-grade heat shrink tubing. If the harness is severely melted or damaged, replace that section of the engine harness.

  4. Inspect the Sensor

    Occasionally, the WIF sensor itself can fail internally and short out the reference voltage. If the wiring tests good but the code persists when the sensor is plugged in, the sensor is the culprit.

  5. Drain the Separator

    While working on the assembly, open the petcock on the bottom of the fuel filter to drain any accumulated water.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the WIF sensor, the ECM, and the battery. Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the inactive 19500 fault code. Turn the key to the ON position and verify that the Water in Fuel lamp illuminates briefly for its bulb-check and then turns off without throwing an active code.
