Case IH 19502 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Monitoring of the lower limit of the fuel mass observer correction quantity
Issue description
The Fuel Mass Observer (FMO) algorithm detects deviations in the performance of the fuel injection and air-handling systems. When the deviation hits the lower limit, the system is applying the maximum allowed negative correction to the fuel injection quantity or EGR setpoint, indicating actual fuel injection quantity is lower than expected, or there is a severe air/fuel ratio imbalance.

Check the cause
Check for accompanying active codes related to the Lambda (O2) sensor, Mass Air Flow (MAF), EGR valve, or fuel pressure, as these sensors feed the FMO algorithm.
Inspect the air intake system for heavy filter clogging, restrictions, or air leaks in the intake manifold and piping.
Inspect the low-pressure fuel system for a restricted fuel supply line, a plugged fuel pump inlet strainer, or a clogged primary fuel filter.
Evaluate the EGR system to ensure the EGR valve is not stuck open or flowing too high, which displaces oxygen.
Test the Lambda (O2) sensor signal and return circuits to verify it is not fouled or failing.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Connect a compatible diagnostic scan tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool, TEXA, or Cojali Off-Highway kit) to read all active and stored fault codes in the Engine ECU.
Resolve Primary Sensor Faults
If there are codes for the Lambda sensor, EGR valve, or fuel pressure sensors, diagnose and replace those components first, as they directly feed the FMO algorithm.
Service Air & Fuel Filters
Replace the engine air filter and fuel filters. Clean the fuel pump inlet strainer to rule out basic supply restrictions.
Replace the Lambda Sensor
If the air and fuel supply are verified but the FMO correction remains at the lower limit, the Lambda sensor is likely degraded. Replace the sensor and use the diagnostic tool to perform a 'Reset ECU data (Lambda sensor)' configuration.
Test and Replace Fuel Injectors
If the issue persists, perform a cylinder contribution or injector balance test. Replace the faulty injectors (OEM guidelines recommend replacing the entire set to ensure uniform oil output and atomization).
Clear Codes and Reset Derate
Clear the fault codes. If the engine was in a derate condition, resetting the counter allows the engine to restart at full power. Run the engine under load for at least 30 minutes to confirm the system is functioning normally and the FMO correction has stabilized.
