Case IH 19512 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Over temperature error on Powerstage 1
Issue description
The internal temperature of the Powerstage 1 circuit has exceeded its safe operating limit. This is almost always caused by an external electrical issue, such as a short circuit in the wiring harness or a failing actuator drawing excessive current, which forces the ECU to work harder and overheat, or it indicates an internal hardware failure within the ECU itself.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the ECU housing to ensure it is not subjected to extreme external heat, such as from missing heat shields.
Disconnect the ECU harness and inspect the pins on both the module and connector for melting, arcing, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Test the wiring harness circuits driven by Powerstage 1 for shorts to ground or battery using a multimeter.
Check the resistance of the actuators controlled by this powerstage (e.g., fuel injectors, EGR valve) against OEM specifications to identify internal shorts.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage during testing.
Disconnect ECU
Locate the Engine Control Unit and carefully unplug the wiring harness connectors.
Isolate the Short
Based on your multimeter tests, trace the wiring harness from the ECU to the engine actuators. Look for chafed wires rubbing against the engine block or frame.
Repair/Replace Components
If a wire is chafed and shorting to ground, repair the wiring harness or replace the affected harness section. If an actuator (e.g., fuel injector) fails the resistance test, replace the faulty actuator.
ECU Replacement (If Necessary)
If the wiring harness and all actuators test perfectly fine, the ECU's internal Powerstage 1 circuit has likely suffered permanent thermal damage. The ECU will need to be replaced and flashed with the correct software for the machine.
Reassembly and Testing
Reconnect all components, restore battery power, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic scan tool, and run the machine under load to verify the code does not return.
