Case IH 19513 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): Short circuit to battery error for powerstage 1

Issue description

The Engine ECU detects that the voltage on the powerstage 1 circuit (usually the high-side driver circuit for the Cylinder 1 Fuel Injector Solenoid, or sometimes the Urea Dosing Valve or Supply Module Heater) is unexpectedly equal to battery voltage, indicating that the wiring is shorted to a power source, the actuator has failed internally, or the ECU's internal driver has shorted out.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the engine wiring harness routing from the Engine ECU to the Cylinder 1 injector (or urea dosing valve) for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinch points rubbing against a positive battery cable or alternator output.

  2. Perform a harness voltage test by disconnecting the actuator, turning the key ON, and checking for voltage at the harness connector pins (presence of battery voltage indicates a short to power).

  3. Measure the internal resistance of the Cylinder 1 injector solenoid (or dosing valve) to ensure it has not shorted internally to its casing.

  4. Disconnect the Engine ECU connectors and inspect the pins for corrosion, water ingress, or bent pins bridging a power circuit to the Powerstage 1 pin.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the master battery disconnect switch to prevent accidental arcing or further ECU damage.

  2. Isolate the Short

    Based on the diagnostic checks, locate the exact point of the short circuit.

  3. Repair the Harness

    If the wiring harness is chafed and touching a power source, open the wire loom, cut out the damaged section of wire, solder in a new section with heat-shrink tubing, and re-loom the harness securely away from vibration points.

  4. Replace the Actuator

    If the injector or dosing valve failed the resistance test, relieve the system pressure, remove the faulty component, and install a new OEM replacement.

  5. Replace the ECU

    If the harness tests perfectly and the actuator is good, the internal Powerstage 1 driver inside the ECU has failed. The Engine ECU must be replaced and flashed with the correct software for the machine.

  6. Clear Codes

    Reconnect battery power, cycle the key, and use a diagnostic scan tool (like the CNH EST) to clear the inactive 19513 fault code.
