Case IH 19528 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): Misfire detected in cylinder 1
Issue description
The engine control system has detected an abnormal combustion event, lack of combustion, or a power contribution failure specifically localized to the first cylinder of the engine.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Tier 4b
- Puma series (130 through 225)
- Maxxum series (110 through 140)
- Magnum series
- N-Series Tractor Loader Backhoes (TLBs) Tier 4 Final
- Selected multi-row harvesting platforms
Check the cause
Check for fuel inlet or return restrictions, and verify there is no air ingress into the fuel supply.
Check the fuel delivery performance of the gear supply (lift) pump and the pressure control of the high-pressure pump inlet regulator.
Use the Case IH AFS Service Tool (or equivalent scan tool) to perform a Fuel Correction Test or cylinder cut-out test to isolate Cylinder 1 and check the fuel leakage rate from the electronically controlled injectors.
If the fuel system is functioning properly, perform an in-cylinder pressure/compression test to rule out mechanical failures such as broken piston rings, damaged cylinder walls, or valve seating issues.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Hook up the Case IH AFS Service Tool to the machine's diagnostic port to verify code 19528 is active and monitor real-time misfire data for Cylinder 1.
Provide Alternate Fuel Supply
To rule out chassis fuel line issues, provide an alternate clean fuel supply directly to the engine to see if the misfire clears.
Inspect High-Pressure Lines
Check the high-pressure fuel lines and the rail connections for leaks, damage, or loss of torque.
Replace Faulty Injector
If the scan tool isolates the injector as the failure point (or if excessive return leakage is found), remove the high-pressure line and hold-down clamp for Cylinder 1, and extract the faulty fuel injector.
Address Mechanical Damage
If the injector is fine but compression is low, the cylinder head must be removed to repair damaged valves, or the engine block must be serviced for piston ring replacement.
Clear Codes and Test
After replacing the faulty component, use the diagnostic tool to clear the ECU memory. Perform a forced Service Regeneration if the misfire caused excessive soot buildup in the DPF/Catalyst. Test drive the machine under load to ensure the code does not return.
