Case IH 19529 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: Misfire detected in cylinder 4

Issue description

The engine control system has detected that the specified cylinder is not contributing power to the crankshaft as expected. This is most commonly caused by a failed fuel injector, a loss of cylinder compression, or an electrical fault in the injector wiring circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Connect a diagnostic scan tool to read all stored fault codes, checking for accompanying codes related to fuel rail pressure or specific injector circuit electrical faults.

  2. Perform an injector cut-out test (cylinder balance test) using the scan tool to confirm if cylinder 4 is the dead cylinder.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector going to the cylinder 4 fuel injector for chafed wires, short circuits to ground, or corrosion in the connector pins.

  4. Perform a relative compression test using the diagnostic tool or a manual compression test to rule out internal engine damage (e.g., bad piston rings or valves).

  5. Swap the cylinder 4 injector with another cylinder. If the misfire code follows the injector to the new cylinder, the injector is definitively at fault.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Disconnect the machine's battery. Clean the area around the cylinder 4 injector thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the engine.

  2. Disconnect Lines

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the cylinder 4 injector.

  3. Remove High-Pressure Line

    Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the common fuel rail to the injector. Cap the rail fitting immediately to prevent contamination.

  4. Extract the Injector

    Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully pull the injector out of the cylinder head.

  5. Clean the Bore

    Clean the injector bore in the cylinder head, ensuring the old copper sealing washer is removed and no carbon debris falls into the combustion chamber.

  6. Installation

    Install the new fuel injector using a new copper crush washer/seal.

  7. Torque

    Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to the exact FPT OEM specifications. Reinstall the high-pressure fuel line and torque the fittings.

  8. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery.

  9. ECU Programming

    Using your diagnostic scan tool, program the new injector's trim code (IQA code, usually printed on the top of the new injector) into the Engine ECU so the module can adjust fueling parameters correctly.

  10. Clear and Test

    Clear the 19529 fault code and run the engine to verify the misfire is resolved.
