Case IH 19530 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Misfire detected in cylinder 2
Issue description
The engine control system detects a misfire by monitoring the engine speed acceleration between Top Dead Center (TDC) and Bottom Dead Center (BDC) of the dedicated cylinder. If the system detects more than 200 cycles with abnormally low engine acceleration within a span of 1,000 engine revolutions, it logs a misfire fault for that specific cylinder.

Check the cause
Connect a diagnostic tool and perform a cylinder balance or cut-out test to verify cylinder 2 is underperforming
Check the fuel filter and water separator for water contamination or debris
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the cylinder 2 fuel injector for chafing, shorts, or loose connections
Perform a mechanical compression test (dry, then wet) to check for stuck/worn piston rings or valve/head gasket issues
Pressurize the cooling system and run the engine to check for a head gasket failure leaking coolant into the combustion chamber
Repair steps
Verify the Fault
Clear the fault code memory using your diagnostic tool. Run the engine to see if the 19530 code returns as an active fault.
Isolate the Injector
If the wiring to cylinder 2 is intact, remove the cylinder 2 fuel injector and swap it with the injector from a known good cylinder (e.g., cylinder 1).
Retest
Run the engine and perform the cylinder cut-out test again. If the misfire moves to the new cylinder, the fuel injector is faulty and must be replaced. If the misfire stays on cylinder 2, the issue is mechanical (e.g., valves, piston rings, or head gasket).
Mechanical Repair
If the issue is mechanical, remove the cylinder head cover and inspect the valvetrain (pushrods, rockers, and valve springs) for damage or sticking valves. If the head gasket has failed, remove the cylinder head, inspect the block and head for warping, and replace the cylinder head gasket.
Reassembly and Calibration
Reinstall all components, torquing bolts to factory specifications. If a new injector was installed, use the diagnostic tool to program the new injector's calibration code into the ECM.
Final Test
Clear all fault codes and test run the machine under load to ensure the misfire is resolved.
