Case IH 19538: NOx feedback fault detection
Issue description
The code 19538 does not exist in the Case IH Engine Control Module (ECM) or Dosing Control Unit (DCU) fault architecture. In the agricultural and heavy-duty equipment sector, the number 19538 actually refers to physical replacement parts.

Check the cause
Verify Sensor Position: Determine if the genuine NOx fault is logged against the upstream (pre-SCR, engine-out NOx) or downstream (post-SCR, efficiency confirmation) NOx sensor.
Visual Inspection: Inspect the NOx sensor wiring harness, connectors, and pins for heat damage, chafing, corrosion, or water ingress.
Electrical Testing: Check for proper power, ground, and CAN communication at the sensor connector. Measure the heater circuit resistance with the connector unplugged.
Live Data Monitoring: Use a diagnostic tool to monitor live NOx data at idle and under load. Look for erratic readings, dropouts, or implausible values compared to expected SCR conversion efficiency.
DEF/AdBlue System Check: Ensure the DEF dosing system is functioning correctly and that there are no leaks before the sensor, as poor dosing can trigger NOx feedback errors.
Repair steps
Disconnect batteries
Disconnect the vehicle's batteries to prevent electrical shorts before beginning work on the sensor.
Locate faulty sensor
Locate the faulty NOx sensor (upstream near the turbocharger/DPF or downstream after the SCR catalyst).
Disconnect wiring
Disconnect the sensor's electrical connector from the wiring harness.
Remove sensor
Apply penetrating oil to the sensor threads if seized, and carefully unscrew the sensor from the exhaust pipe using a specialized NOx/O2 sensor socket.
Install new sensor
Install the new NOx sensor, applying anti-seize compound to the threads (avoiding the sensor tip). Torque to OEM specifications.
Reconnect wiring
Route the wiring harness safely away from extreme heat sources and reconnect the electrical plug.
Reconnect batteries
Reconnect the vehicle's batteries.
Clear codes and reset
Connect a diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes and perform a NOx sensor reset/adaptation procedure. A short drive cycle may be required to validate the repair.
