Case IH 19540 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Vehicle Control Module (VCM) / EDC: Offset Max error detection based on the NOx Offset value
Issue description
This code indicates that the NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) sensor's offset value has exceeded the maximum allowable limit. The sensor is reporting an implausible baseline reading (an offset that is too high) when the exhaust gas should have a known baseline NOx concentration. This typically points to an internal failure of the sensor's sensing element, a loss of calibration, or severe soot/DEF (AdBlue) contamination on the sensor probe.

Check the cause
Verify the active DTC using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and determine whether the fault originates from the upstream (inlet) or downstream (outlet) NOx sensor.
Check the NOx sensor wiring harness and 5-pin connector for open circuits, short circuits, melted wires, or corrosion. Verify proper power, ground, and heater circuit voltage.
Monitor live data for the NOx sensor. Compare pre-SCR and post-SCR NOx readings. A high ppm value when the engine is off or during deceleration indicates the sensor is internally skewed.
Remove the sensor and inspect the probe for excessive soot packing or crystallized DEF (AdBlue) buildup, which can smother the sensor.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the machine, disconnect the battery, and allow the exhaust aftertreatment system to cool completely to avoid severe burns.
Disconnection
Locate the affected NOx sensor on the exhaust pipe (either before or after the SCR catalyst). Disconnect the sensor's electrical connector from the wiring harness.
Removal
Using a 22mm to 27mm deep-well 6-point socket or a crowfoot wrench, carefully break the NOx sensor loose and remove it from the exhaust pipe.
Cleaning (Optional/Conditional)
If the sensor is heavily coated in DEF buildup but otherwise intact, you can attempt to gently clean the probe area with a soft wire brush. Do not use harsh chemicals, abrasive materials, or allow the sensor tip to become wet. However, because offset errors usually indicate internal element failure, replacement is highly recommended.
Installation
Apply a small amount of high-temperature anti-seize compound to the threads of the new NOx sensor (if it does not come pre-applied). Crucial: Do not get any anti-seize on the sensor probe itself.
Torque
Thread the new sensor into the exhaust pipe by hand to prevent cross-threading, then torque it to the manufacturer's specification using your specialized socket.
Reconnection
Reconnect the sensor's electrical connector and reconnect the machine's battery.
Post-Repair Verification
Use the EST diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes. Start the engine and run it under load until the exhaust reaches operating temperature (above 1,400°F) so the sensor begins reporting on the CAN bus. Verify that code 19540 does not return.
