Case IH 19541 – DCU: Coolant control valve mechanically | Blocked closed | P20A1 Vent valve test plausibility test (startup)

Issue description

A mechanical failure in the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system's heating circuit where the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid / AdBlue) coolant control valve is mechanically stuck in the closed position, failing to open during the startup plausibility test.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Physical Blockages: Inspect the coolant hoses running to and from the DEF tank heater control valve for kinks, pinches, or internal blockages that would prevent coolant flow.

  2. Test Valve Actuation: Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to manually command the DEF coolant control valve open and closed. Listen/feel for a mechanical click. If it does not actuate, the internal solenoid pintle is likely seized.

  3. Verify Hose Routing: Ensure the DEF heater lines are routed correctly. On some models, the line with the 'red' band must be connected to the top tube running to the front of the engine head. Incorrect routing can cause continuous hot water circulation, which damages the valve and causes it to seize.

  4. Check Valve Orientation: The heater control valve is a directional valve. If it was previously serviced and installed backward, it cannot properly cut off or open coolant flow against system pressure.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and allow the cooling system to depressurize and cool down completely.

  2. Drain Coolant

    Partially drain the engine coolant to a level below the DEF coolant control valve to prevent excessive fluid loss and spills.

  3. Disconnect Electrical

    Locate the DEF/AdBlue heater control valve (usually mounted on a support bracket near the DEF module/tank). Disconnect the 12V wiring harness from the valve.

  4. Remove Hoses

    Disconnect the coolant inlet line, the coolant outlet line, and the bypass line from the valve. Be prepared to catch residual coolant.

  5. Remove the Valve

    Remove the hex bolts securing the valve to its mounting support bracket and remove the faulty valve.

  6. Install the New Valve

    Position the new valve on the bracket and secure it with the hex bolts. Crucial: Ensure the directional flow arrow on the valve matches the direction of coolant flow toward the DEF tank.

  7. Reconnect

    Reattach the coolant inlet, outlet, and bypass lines. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Refill and Bleed

    Refill the engine cooling system to the proper level. Start the engine and let it run to bleed any trapped air from the cooling system. Check for leaks.

  9. Clear Codes

    Use your diagnostic tool to clear the 19541 / P20A1 fault code. Cycle the key to trigger the startup plausibility test and verify the code does not return.
