Case IH 19563 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Vehicle Control Module (VCM) / EDC17C49: Error detection and healing of MAX error of lambda plausibility test

Issue description

The engine's Lambda (Oxygen/O2) or NOx sensor has failed a plausibility check by registering a 'MAX error.' The measured value exceeds the maximum allowed threshold and is deemed implausible.

Check the cause

  1. Check for external factors such as exhaust leaks, intake issues, or EGR malfunctions causing artificially high oxygen/NOx readings.

  2. Inspect the sensor's wiring harness and its 5-pin connector for corrosion, damage, or short circuits.

  3. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or FPT Engine Troubleshooting software to observe the live physical signal of the Lambda/NOx sensor and confirm it is reading out of bounds.

  4. If the wiring is intact and the reading remains implausible, verify sensor accuracy as the sensor itself has likely failed.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare the machine for maintenance

    Move the machine to a secure, level maintenance area and ensure the exhaust system has completely cooled down to prevent burns.

  2. Read and save the fault code report

    Using the Case IH EST or FPT diagnostic software, read and save the fault code report.

  3. Locate the faulty sensor

    Locate the faulty Lambda/NOx sensor on the exhaust after-treatment system (ATS).

  4. Disconnect the wiring harness

    Disconnect the 5-pin wiring harness connector from the sensor.

  5. Remove the faulty sensor

    Carefully unscrew and remove the faulty sensor from the exhaust pipe/manifold.

  6. Install the new sensor

    Install the new genuine replacement sensor, ensuring the threads are properly seated.

  7. Reconnect the wiring harness

    Reconnect the 5-pin wiring harness.

  8. Clear the fault code and reset counters

    Reconnect the diagnostic tool, clear the 19563 fault code, and reset any associated counters.

  9. Verify the repair

    Run the engine and monitor the live data to ensure the Lambda/NOx plausibility test passes and the code does not return.
