Issue description

This is a communication error on the SAE J1939 CAN bus. The system is expecting a data frame (E2SCR) that contains the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF / Urea) tank level, but the signal being received is either missing, invalid, or out of range. This typically points to a failure of the DEF tank level sensor, the DEF Head Unit, or a wiring issue on the CAN bus network.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the DEF tank is not completely empty or overfilled, which could cause an implausible reading

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at the DEF Head Unit for moisture, corrosion, backed-out pins, or chafed wires

  3. Check the J1939 CAN bus wiring between the DEF Head Unit and the DCU using a multimeter (terminating resistance across CAN High and CAN Low should be approximately 60 ohms)

  4. Look for accompanying DCU codes like 19578, 19579, or 19580, which may indicate a severed CAN wire or a completely dead DEF Head Unit

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Turn off the equipment, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts and reset the modules.

  2. Clean the Area

    Locate the DEF tank. Thoroughly clean the area around the DEF Head Unit to prevent dirt or debris from falling into the tank during removal.

  3. Disconnect the Unit

    Unplug the electrical connector and disconnect the DEF suction and return lines from the head unit. (Have a rag ready to catch minor DEF spills, and wash any spilled DEF away with warm water immediately).

  4. Wiring Repair (If Applicable)

    If your diagnostics revealed corroded pins or broken wires at the connector, splice in a new OEM connector pigtail.

  5. Remove the DEF Head Unit

    If the wiring is intact, the sensor itself has failed. Remove the mounting bolts or unscrew the retaining ring securing the DEF Head Unit to the tank. Carefully pull the assembly straight up and out of the tank.

  6. Install the New Unit

    Insert the new DEF Head Unit, ensuring the new rubber gasket/seal is properly seated to prevent leaks. Fasten the retaining ring or bolts to OEM torque specs.

  7. Reassemble

    Reconnect the DEF fluid lines and plug in the electrical connector.

  8. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition to the ON position. Use a diagnostic scan tool (like the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the 19577 / P0600 fault codes. Verify that the DEF level gauge on the dash is now reading accurately.
