Case IH 19585 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Low oil viscosity

The engine control system has detected that the engine oil has thinned out beyond acceptable operational parameters. This is most commonly caused by fuel dilution (diesel fuel washing past the piston rings into the crankcase) due to frequent/failed DPF regenerations, leaking fuel injectors, or a leaking high-pressure fuel pump seal. It can also be triggered if an incorrect, lower-viscosity oil grade was used.

   Check the Oil Level and Condition: Pull the dipstick to check the oil level. If the oil level is significantly over the 'Full' mark and smells strongly of diesel fuel, fuel dilution is the culprit.

   Verify Oil Grade: Confirm that the correct oil weight (e.g., 10W-40 CJ-4/CK-4) was used during the last oil change.

   Check DPF Regeneration History: Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check the frequency of DPF regenerations. Excessive active regenerations inject extra fuel into the exhaust stroke, which can wash down the cylinder walls and dilute the crankcase oil.

   Inspect Fuel System Components: Test the fuel injectors for leakage and inspect the high-pressure fuel pump shaft seal for internal leaks that could be dumping fuel directly into the engine block.

   Address the Root Cause

   Before changing the oil, fix the source of the fuel dilution. Depending on diagnostics, this may require forcing a successful DPF regeneration, replacing a faulty DPF sensor, replacing leaking fuel injectors, or replacing the high-pressure fuel pump.

   Drain the Engine Oil

   Once the mechanical issue is resolved, safely drain the diluted engine oil from the oil pan.

   Replace the Oil Filter

   Remove the old engine oil filter, lubricate the gasket of the new OEM filter with clean oil, and install it.

   Refill Engine Oil

   Refill the engine crankcase to the proper capacity using the OEM-recommended 10W-40 engine oil.

   Clear the Fault Code

   Connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool to the machine and clear fault code 19585 from the Engine ECU.

   Test Run

   Start the engine, check for leaks around the new filter, and run the machine at operating temperature to verify the fault code does not return.
