Case IH 19605 – DCU (Dosing Control Unit): CAN receive frame ET1 (Oil and Water temp engine) _timeout _P0600 Serial Communication Link

Issue description

The control module is expecting to receive the ET1 data frame over the SAE J1939 CAN bus network, which contains the engine's oil and water temperature data. The module has not received this message within the expected timeframe, indicating a communication interruption.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4a
  • Case IH Magnum 235
  • Case IH Magnum 250
  • Case IH Magnum 280
  • Case IH Magnum 315
  • Case IH Magnum 340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac 350
  • Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac 400
  • Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac 450
  • Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac 500
  • Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac 550
  • Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac 600
  • Case IH Puma 210
  • Case IH Farmall 115U

Check the cause

  1. Check CAN bus cables and connectors between the Engine Control Module (ECM) and the Dosing Control Unit (DCU) for interruptions, corrosion, or loose pins

  2. Verify ECM functionality to ensure it is properly reading the oil and water temperature sensors and broadcasting the data to the network

  3. Check for related active codes (e.g., 19604, 19606, 19607) or codes related to the engine oil and coolant temperature sensors that might indicate a broader network failure or sensor out-of-range issue

Repair steps

  1. Harness Inspection & Repair

Perform a continuity and resistance test on the CAN High and CAN Low lines between the ECM and the DCU. Repair any chafed wires or replace damaged connector terminals.

  2. Address ECM Issues

If the wiring is intact, diagnose the ECM to ensure it is not failing to send the ET1 message. This may require an ECM software update or addressing a faulty temperature sensor.

  3. DCU Replacement

If the CAN bus is healthy and the ECM is broadcasting correctly, the DCU itself may have a failed internal communication transceiver. Replace the DCU.

  4. Software Configuration

If the DCU is replaced, it requires OEM software installation. Complete and document troubleshooting via the eTIM/Assist system to obtain the passwords required to flash and unlock a new DCU.

  5. Clear Codes

Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the DCU errors. Bring the engine to operating temperature and run under load to verify the SCR system is operating properly and the fault does not return.
