Case IH 19609 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: Counter for the Oil pressure in Oil Sump

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has registered an out-of-range count, an electrical fault (such as a short or open circuit), or an actual low oil pressure condition from the oil pressure sensor/switch located near the oil sump.

Check the cause

  1. Check Oil Levels: Manually check the engine oil dipstick to ensure the oil level in the sump is sufficient and not contaminated.

  2. Verify Actual Pressure: Connect a mechanical oil pressure gauge to the engine block to verify if the engine is actually suffering from low oil pressure (mechanical failure) or if the sensor is simply sending a false reading.

  3. Inspect Wiring Harness: Check the wiring harness running from the oil pressure sensor to the ECM. Look for chafing, damage, short circuits to ground, or open circuits.

  4. Test the Sensor: Test the oil pressure switch/sensor for proper resistance and continuity. The switch should close when oil pressure drops below the minimum threshold (typically around 41.4 kPa / 6.0 psi at low idle).

Repair steps

  1. Shut Down the Machine

    Immediately shut off the engine to prevent internal damage until the cause of the low oil pressure warning is investigated.

  2. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short circuit to ground between the oil pressure switch and the instrument panel/ECM, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  3. Replace the Sensor

    If the wiring is intact but the sensor failed the continuity test, locate the engine oil pressure sensor (typically on the lower side of the engine block near the oil filter/sump). Disconnect the electrical pigtail, unthread the faulty sensor, and install the replacement sensor. Torque to OEM specifications.

  4. Address Mechanical Failures (If Applicable)

    If the mechanical gauge confirms actual low oil pressure, the oil sump may need to be dropped to inspect the oil pump intake screen for clogs, or to replace a worn oil pump.

  5. Clear Codes

    Use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the 19609 fault code from the ECM and run the engine to verify the code does not return.
