Case IH 19612 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Counter for the Oil temperature in oil sump
Issue description
Triggered when the engine oil temperature sensor, located in the oil sump (pan), registers an abnormal temperature condition (such as an over-temperature event or an implausible reading) a specific number of times.

Check the cause
Check the engine oil level on the dipstick to ensure it is not extremely low, which can cause rapid overheating.
Verify actual oil sump temperature using an infrared thermometer to determine if the engine is genuinely overheating or if the sensor is reporting a false high.
Inspect the oil temperature sensor pigtail connector and wiring harness for chafing, corrosion, or a short-to-ground.
Check for concurrent fault codes related to coolant temperature or sensor reference voltages, which may indicate a shared 5V reference wire issue.
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor live oil temperature data for implausible values indicating internal sensor failure.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and allow the oil to cool completely to prevent severe burns.
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.
Locate and Disconnect
Locate the oil temperature sensor on the engine oil sump. Depress the locking tab on the electrical connector and pull it free.
Remove the Sensor
Place a clean drain pan directly under the sensor. Using the appropriate socket or wrench, unthread the sensor from the sump. Note: Depending on the sensor's exact placement on your specific FPT engine model, you may need to drain the engine oil first if the sensor sits below the oil fill line.
Install the New Sensor
Thread the new OEM temperature sensor into the sump by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical harness until it clicks into place.
Refill Oil
If oil was drained or lost during the swap, top off the engine oil to the correct level on the dipstick.
Reset the Counter
Reconnect the battery. You must use the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) to clear the fault code and reset the internal ECM counter.
Test
Start the engine, check for leaks around the new sensor, and verify that the fault code does not return once the engine reaches operating temperature.
