Case IH 19617 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: Counter for the Oil temperature in oil sump

An anomaly in the monitoring, counting, or calculation mechanism related to the engine oil temperature sensor located in the engine's oil sump. The system is detecting an irregularity in how the oil temperature data is being logged or counted over time.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the oil temperature sensor on the engine oil sump for chafed wires, melted insulation, or debris.

   Disconnect the sensor and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or poor terminal tension.

   Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the oil temperature sensor and compare it against standard FPT engine specifications.

   Check for accompanying ECM codes (such as voltage too high, voltage too low, or signal not plausible) which might indicate a dead short or an open circuit rather than just a counter/logic error.

   Prepare machine

   Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

   Locate sensor

   Locate the engine oil temperature sensor on the side or bottom of the engine oil sump.

   Disconnect harness

   Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor.

   Prepare for oil drain

   Place a clean drain pan underneath the sensor. You can either drain the engine oil completely (ideal if the machine is due for a service) or prepare the new sensor to swap it quickly to minimize oil loss.

   Remove sensor

   Unthread the faulty oil temperature sensor from the sump.

   Install new sensor

   Lubricate the O-ring or sealing washer on the new sensor and thread it into the sump. Torque to the specification required for your specific engine block.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness until it clicks securely.

   Refill oil

   Top off the engine oil to the correct level on the dipstick.

   Clear code and test

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use an electronic service tool (like CNH EST) to clear the 19617 fault code. Run the engine to operating temperature to verify the code does not return.
