Case IH 19626 – VCM / Engine ECU: Over pressure too high at P3 in Pressure charger regulator

Issue description

This code indicates an over-boost condition. The engine control system has detected that the intake manifold boost pressure (designated as P3) has exceeded the maximum allowable limit. The turbocharger's wastegate or variable geometry actuator system is failing to properly vent exhaust gases to regulate boost pressure.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Case IH agricultural equipment
  • Case CE construction equipment
  • Case N-series Tractor Loader Backhoes
  • FPT Tier 4 Final engines
  • FPT F36
  • N67
  • Cursor series engines

Check the cause

  1. Perform a Key-On, Engine-Off (KOEO) test to compare the Boost Pressure Sensor (P3) with the Atmospheric Pressure Sensor (checks for skewed/faulty sensor)

  2. Inspect the turbocharger wastegate linkage and actuator (pneumatic or electronic) for physical binding, seized linkages, or a ruptured diaphragm

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Engine ECU/VCM, boost pressure sensor, and wastegate control valve for backed-out terminals, chafing, or corrosion

  4. Check the exhaust system for severe restrictions (such as a blocked DPF/DOC) that could cause abnormal pressure dynamics

Repair steps

  1. Relieve System Pressure

Ensure the machine is turned off and cooled down. The engine and turbocharger components operate at extreme temperatures (up to 750°C for diesel).

  2. Test the Sensor

Disconnect the boost pressure sensor. Use a multimeter to check for proper reference voltage (usually 5V) and ground from the ECU. If the wiring is good but the sensor reads out of range on the diagnostic tool, replace the boost pressure sensor.

  3. Test the Regulator/Wastegate

If the sensor is accurate, the turbocharger is genuinely over-boosting. Disconnect the actuator linkage from the wastegate arm.

  4. Free the Linkage

Move the wastegate arm by hand. If it is seized shut, apply penetrating oil and attempt to free it. If it cannot move freely, the turbocharger assembly must be replaced.

  5. Test the Actuator

If the arm moves freely, test the actuator. For pneumatic wastegates, apply regulated air pressure to the actuator to see if it extends. If it leaks or fails to move, replace the actuator.

  6. Reassembly and Verification

Install the new sensor or turbocharger components. Clear the active 19626 fault code via the diagnostic port. Run the machine under a heavy load to verify that boost pressure remains within the specified parameters and the code does not return.
