Case IH 19629 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): Common rail pressure control valve learning value too high

Issue description

The ECU learned adaptation value for the high-pressure fuel pump's pressure control valve has exceeded the maximum allowable upper limit. The ECU is commanding the valve to stay open much longer than normal to maintain adequate fuel pressure, indicating a loss of efficiency in the high-pressure fuel system.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Optum
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • 580N
  • T6
  • T7
  • T8
  • T9

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the lift pump is delivering adequate supply pressure to the high-pressure pump, and check for clogged primary/secondary fuel filters or collapsed fuel lines (low-pressure system check).

  2. Inspect the fuel rail, high-pressure lines, and pump fittings for any visible external fuel leaks.

  3. Perform an injector return flow test (back-leak test) to check for excessive fuel returning to the tank, which indicates worn internal injector seals bleeding off rail pressure.

  4. Ensure the fuel rail pressure sensor is reading accurately and not falsely reporting low pressure.

  5. Remove the pressure control valve from the high-pressure pump and inspect the screen for metal shavings or debris, which indicates internal pump failure.

Repair steps

  1. Replace Fuel Filters

Start by replacing the fuel filters and bleeding the low-pressure system to eliminate restriction as the cause.

  2. Replace the Pressure Control Valve

If the low-pressure system and injectors are healthy, the pressure control valve is likely sticking or worn. Remove the old valve from the high-pressure pump, lubricate the O-rings on the new valve with clean diesel fuel, and install it.

  3. Replace the High-Pressure Pump

If replacing the valve does not resolve the issue, the high-pressure fuel pump itself is worn internally and must be replaced as an assembly.

  4. Reset ECU Learning Values

Using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), clear the fault codes and perform the 'Pressure Control Valve Learning Value Reset' (or high-pressure pump initialization). This step is critical to prevent the ECU from operating on faulty parameters.

  5. Test Run

Start the engine, bring it to operating temperature, and verify via the diagnostic tool that actual rail pressure matches the setpoint under load.
