Case IH 19638 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): Fuel pressure control valve shorted to battery voltage on the high side

Issue description

The control module has detected unexpected battery voltage (e.g., 12V or 24V) on the high-side control circuit of the fuel pressure control valve (M-Prop/FCA). This indicates a chafed wire touching a live power source, or an internal short within the valve's solenoid coil or the control module itself, which prevents the module from regulating fuel pressure and often results in a derated limp mode or engine shutdown.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the engine wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the fuel pressure control valve for chafed insulation, melted wires, or areas rubbing against the engine block or a hot power wire.

  2. Perform a voltage check by disconnecting the electrical connector at the fuel pressure control valve. Turn the ignition key ON (engine OFF) and measure voltage at the harness pins. Full battery voltage on the control wire indicates a short to power in the harness.

  3. Measure the internal resistance (ohms) across the pins of the fuel pressure control valve. Compare to OEM specifications (typically 1-5 ohms). A reading of 0 ohms indicates the valve is internally shorted.

  4. If the wiring harness and valve test fine, check the ECU pins to determine if the high-side driver inside the Engine ECU has failed and internally shorted to power.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If a short was found in the harness during diagnostics, splice and repair the damaged wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink connectors, then re-loom the harness to prevent future chafing.

  3. Replace the Valve

    If internally shorted, clean the area around the high-pressure fuel pump thoroughly. Remove the mounting screws holding the fuel pressure control valve to the pump and carefully pull the valve out. Lubricate the O-rings on the new valve with clean diesel fuel, insert it into the pump, and torque the mounting screws to the OEM specification.

  4. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the electrical connector to the valve. Reconnect the battery. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible heavy-duty scan tool to clear the inactive fault codes.

  5. Test Run

    Start the engine and monitor the actual vs. commanded fuel rail pressure on the diagnostic tool to ensure the new valve is regulating properly.
