Case IH 19646 – Engine Control Module (ECM) or Denoxtronic / DEF Control Unit (DCU): Defect fault check for open load error

The control module has detected an open circuit on a specific output power stage, meaning electrical current is not flowing through the circuit as expected. This is typically caused by a broken wire, a disconnected plug, a blown fuse, or a component that has failed internally, and is specifically tied to a DEF/AdBlue system actuator or heater circuit.

   Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the diagnostic port to verify that code 19646 is currently active, and check for any associated sub-codes that pinpoint the exact DEF circuit (e.g., DEF line heater, DEF dosing valve, or DEF pump).

   Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU/DCU to the DEF tank and DEF supply module. Look for disconnected connectors, chafed wires, or corrosion in the pins.

   Disconnect the suspected DEF system actuator/heater. Use a digital multimeter to measure the resistance (Ohms) across the component's terminals. A reading of 'OL' (Out of Limits) confirms the component has an internal open circuit.

   Pin out the wiring harness between the ECU and the component to ensure there is no break in the wiring.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and shut off the main battery disconnect switch to prevent electrical spikes.

   Isolate the Fault

   Based on your continuity tests, determine if the open circuit is in the wiring harness or the component itself.

   Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

   If a wire is broken or a connector is heavily corroded, repair the wiring harness using OEM-approved weather-sealed splices, or replace the damaged harness section.

   Replace Component (If Applicable)

   If the DEF actuator or heater tests open (OL), remove the faulty component and install the replacement part. Ensure all weather-pack seals on the electrical connectors are intact and seated properly.

   Restore Parameters

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST).

   Clear and Test

   Clear the inactive fault codes. Start and operate the machine to ensure the ECU self-learning parameters are restored and the fault code does not return.
