Case IH 19652 – DCU (Dosing Control Unit): UREA Tank level error (CAN message or electrical with real sensor) – (TIMEOUT)

Issue description

The controller has lost communication with the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF/Urea) tank level sensor. A TIMEOUT indicates that the expected CAN message from the sensor was not received within the required timeframe, pointing to an open circuit, a wiring harness failure, or a completely dead sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness from the DEF tank level sensor back to the DCU for chafed wires, rodent damage, or pinch points.

  2. Disconnect the DEF level sensor and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture intrusion, pushed-out pins, or DEF fluid contamination.

  3. Using a multimeter, verify the sensor is receiving its required supply voltage and ground.

  4. Check the CAN High and CAN Low lines for continuity and proper resistance (typically 60 ohms across the CAN network).

  5. Inspect the inside of the DEF tank for crystallized, old, or contaminated DEF that may have physically damaged the sensor float or ultrasonic reading mechanism.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the top of the DEF tank around the sensor/header unit to prevent dirt from falling into the tank during removal.

  3. Disconnect Lines

    Carefully unplug the electrical connector. If replacing the entire DEF head unit, disconnect the DEF suction and return lines, as well as the engine coolant lines (which heat the DEF tank). Note: Clamp the coolant lines to prevent fluid loss.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Unscrew the locking ring or mounting bolts securing the DEF level sensor/header to the tank and pull the unit straight up.

  5. Install the New Part

    Insert the new sensor assembly, ensuring the rubber O-ring/gasket is properly seated to prevent leaks. Tighten the locking ring.

  6. Reconnect

    Reattach the DEF lines, coolant lines, and the electrical connector.

  7. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive 19652 fault code from the DCU. Turn the key on and verify the DEF gauge on the dash reads the correct fluid level.
