Case IH 19656 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Plausibility check: Measured fuel pressure upstream main filter is higher than the possible physical maximum in this operating point.
Issue description
The engine's computer is receiving a voltage signal from the low-pressure fuel sensor (located before the main fuel filter) that translates to a pressure value higher than the lift pump is physically capable of producing. This typically indicates an electrical short to voltage, a failed sensor element, or a severely pinched fuel return line causing a massive pressure spike.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the low-pressure fuel sensor for chafing, bare wires, or water ingress, which can cause a short to voltage.
Use a multimeter to check the sensor circuit for a short to the 5V reference or 12V battery power.
Connect a diagnostic scan tool and monitor the live fuel pressure voltage. If the sensor reads at its absolute maximum voltage (e.g., 5.0V) with the engine off, the sensor is likely shorted internally.
Inspect the low-pressure fuel lines and the fuel filter housing for physical blockages or pinched return lines that could cause an abnormal pressure spike.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Relieve Pressure
Relieve any residual pressure in the low-pressure fuel system to prevent fuel spray.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the low-pressure fuel sensor, which is typically threaded into the fuel filter housing or the low-pressure supply line upstream of the main filter.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor. Carefully unthread the faulty sensor from the housing.
Installation
Clean the mounting port. Thread in the new OEM fuel pressure sensor and tighten it to the factory torque specification.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the weather seal clicks into place. Reconnect the battery.
Priming
Prime the fuel system to purge any air introduced during the sensor swap.
Verification
Start the engine, check the sensor fitting for leaks, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 19656 fault code.
