Case IH 19657 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Plausibility check: Measured fuel pressure upstream main filter is less than the possible physical minimum in this operating point

Issue description

The engine's control system is reading a low-pressure fuel feed value that is impossibly low for the engine's current RPM and load. This plausibility failure indicates that either the engine is being starved of fuel before it reaches the main filter (due to a severe restriction or failing supply pump), or the pressure sensor itself (or its wiring) has failed and is sending an erroneous signal.

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the fuel tank is not empty and that the fuel is not gelled (in cold weather) or heavily contaminated.

  2. Inspect the low-pressure fuel supply lines from the tank to the lift pump and filter housing for kinks, collapsed hoses, or leaks that could draw in air.

  3. Inspect the fuel pre-filter / water separator for severe clogging or water accumulation, which is the most common cause of a pressure drop upstream of the main filter.

  4. Verify that the electric or mechanical fuel lift/supply pump is operating correctly and delivering adequate feed pressure to the filter housing.

  5. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the upstream fuel pressure sensor for chafing, corrosion, or an open/short circuit.

  6. Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor the live voltage/pressure reading of the sensor. If the reading is static at 0 or an impossible negative value while the engine is running, the sensor or circuit is faulty.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

    Turn off the engine and allow the system to depressurize.

  2. Replace Filters

    Drain the fuel pre-filter/water separator. Replace both the pre-filter and the main fuel filter to eliminate a physical restriction as the cause of the low pressure.

  3. Prime the System

    Use the manual primer pump (or cycle the electric lift pump) to bleed all trapped air from the low-pressure fuel system.

  4. Test Run

    Start the engine. If the code clears and pressure returns to normal, the issue was a clogged filter.

  5. Circuit Testing

    If the code persists, disconnect the upstream fuel pressure sensor. Use a multimeter to verify that the sensor is receiving the correct 5V reference and ground from the ECM.

  6. Replace Sensor

    If the wiring tests good but the sensor output remains implausible, remove and replace the upstream fuel pressure sensor.

  7. Reset ECU

    Clear the fault codes using the EST diagnostic scanner. Run the engine through a full operating cycle to ensure the code does not return.
