Case IH 1967-12 - UCM – UCM: Rear pilot head #5 reporting internal controller fault

This fault indicates an internal hardware or electronic failure within the pilot head (the electronic actuator) mounted on top of the #5 Electro-Hydraulic Remote (EHR) valve. When the internal controller fails, the remote valve will typically exhibit erratic flow, low spool movement, or cease to function entirely.

   Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to confirm the active codes and check if the fault is intermittent or constant.

   Disconnect the remote valve connector and use a multimeter to check the resistance of the CAN wiring between terminals 2 and 3 (blue and red wires). The resistance should be approximately 120 Ω. If it is not, trace the wiring for a short or open circuit.

   Verify the UCM supply voltage and ensure the EHR relays and fuses (e.g., F-040 7.5 AMP fuse for the Armrest control unit) are operating correctly.

   Isolate the pilot head by swapping the #5 pilot head with a known good remote (e.g., #4). If the fault code follows the pilot head to the new location, the pilot head itself is definitively faulty.

   Removal

   Relieve all hydraulic pressure. Undo the hexagon-headed screws securing the pilot head assembly to the rear EHR valve slice and remove the faulty pilot head.

   Seal Replacement

   Remove and discard the old O-rings between the slice and the pilot head.

   Installation

   Install the new O-rings and mount the replacement pilot head, tightening the hexagon screws to spec. Reconnect the electrical harness.

   Valve Renumbering

   Use the EST or the tractor's display (using the HK/HJ diagnostic menus on the U1 controller) to reassign the valve addresses. This 'HJ valve renumbering procedure' tells the UCM which cab lever controls the newly installed valve.

   Calibration

   Perform the EHR electro-hydraulic control valve calibration procedure using the EST to tune the valve for proper spool movement and constant flow.
