Case IH 19672 – Engine ECU / VCM: Turbine downstream pressure is too high

Issue description

The physical signal from the Turbine Downstream Pressure Sensor measures a value that is above the maximum allowable limit, indicating excessive exhaust backpressure immediately after the turbocharger turbine.

Check the cause

  1. Static Plausibility Check: With the key on and the engine off, check the sensor reading. It should match ambient atmospheric pressure. If it reads high while the engine is off, the sensor has 'drifted' and is faulty.

  2. Exhaust Restriction Check: Inspect the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) for heavy soot/ash loading or physical collapse.

  3. Wiring and Circuit Check: Inspect the sensor's wiring harness for a short circuit to a voltage source or high resistance, which can artificially inflate the sensor's voltage signal to the ECU.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

    Hook up your diagnostic scanner to read the live data for the Turbine Downstream Pressure Sensor.

  2. Perform Key-On, Engine-Off (KOEO) Test

    Compare the turbine downstream pressure reading to the ambient barometric pressure. If the sensor shows a high pressure value with the engine off, the sensor is defective and must be replaced.

  3. Inspect the Exhaust System

    If the sensor reads normally during the KOEO test, start the engine. If the pressure spikes abnormally under load, inspect the exhaust system (DPF/DOC) for blockages. Perform a forced DPF regeneration if the system indicates high soot load.

  4. Inspect the Harness

    Disconnect the sensor and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage. Test the wiring back to the Engine ECU for continuity and ensure there are no shorts to battery voltage.

  5. Replace the Sensor

    If the exhaust system is clear and the wiring is intact but the sensor fails the plausibility check, replace the Turbine Downstream Pressure Sensor.

  6. Clear Codes

    After replacement or clearing the exhaust restriction, clear the 19672 fault code and test run the machine under load to ensure the code does not return.
