Case IH 19675 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Turbine upstream pressure is too high
Issue description
The exhaust gas pressure measured between the engine exhaust manifold and the turbocharger turbine (upstream) has exceeded the maximum allowable physical limit for the current engine operating condition. This condition is typically caused by a physical restriction in the exhaust system downstream of the engine, a stuck turbocharger component, or a blocked/faulty pressure sensor.

Check the cause
Sensor Plausibility Check: Using a diagnostic scan tool, check the turbine upstream pressure sensor reading with the engine OFF. The reading should match the ambient barometric pressure. If it reads significantly higher, the sensor or its tube is the culprit.
Inspect the Signal Tube: The most common cause of this fault is soot or carbon buildup clogging the metal signal tube that connects the exhaust manifold to the pressure sensor.
Check the Wiring: Inspect the sensor's pigtail connector and wiring harness for corrosion, chafing, or bent pins.
Exhaust Restriction Check: Check the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) soot load via the scan tool to ensure the exhaust isn't physically restricted.
Turbocharger Check: Verify that the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) actuator is not stuck in a closed position, which would artificially create excessive exhaust backpressure.
Repair steps
Cool Down
Turn off the engine and allow the exhaust system to completely cool to avoid burns.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the turbine upstream pressure sensor (exhaust gas pressure sensor), typically mounted near the exhaust manifold or turbocharger.
Remove the Sensor and Tube
Disconnect the electrical harness. Unbolt the sensor and carefully remove the metal signal tube connecting the sensor to the exhaust manifold.
Clean the Tube
Inspect the inside of the metal tube. If it is packed with soot or carbon, use a wire pick, a small brush, and compressed air to thoroughly clean the blockage. (Note: If the tube is cracked or heavily corroded, it must be replaced).
Reinstall and Test
Reinstall the cleaned tube and the sensor. Clear the fault code using a diagnostic tool and test run the machine under load.
Replace the Sensor
If the tube was completely clear during inspection, or if the code immediately returns after cleaning the tube, the sensor itself has failed internally and must be replaced.
Perform a DPF Regen
If the sensor and tube are both functioning properly, the high pressure is likely real. Perform a forced/manual DPF regeneration to clear out exhaust restrictions.
