Case IH 19682 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Threshold of the battery under-voltage for switching to start with MeUn procedure
Issue description
During engine cranking, the system voltage dropped below a critical minimum threshold. When this severe voltage drop is detected, the engine control system initiates a specific fallback starting procedure utilizing the Fuel Metering Unit (MeUn / Fuel Pressure Regulator) to manage and maintain high-pressure fuel rail parameters under low-voltage conditions. This code is primarily a symptom of a weak electrical supply during cranking rather than a direct failure of the fuel system itself.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Tier 4b
- Maxxum
- Puma
- Magnum
- Farmall series
- 580N
Check the cause
Perform a battery load test to check resting voltage and determine if batteries can maintain adequate voltage during high-amperage draw
Inspect all battery terminals, crossover cables, and chassis/engine ground connections for corrosion, looseness, or fraying
Measure the amperage draw of the starter motor during cranking to check for excessive current draw
Verify the alternator is properly charging the batteries (typically 13.5V - 14.2V while running)
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the Engine ECU to the Fuel Metering Unit (MeUn) for chafing or shorts
Repair steps
Clean and Tighten
Disconnect the batteries and thoroughly clean all battery posts, terminals, and ground straps. Reconnect and tighten to OEM torque specifications.
Replace Batteries
If the batteries fail the load test or cannot hold a charge, replace them with heavy-duty agricultural batteries matching the OEM Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) rating.
Replace Starter Motor
If the batteries and cables are in good condition but the voltage still drops excessively during cranking (and the starter is drawing too much amperage), replace the starter motor.
Clear Codes
Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the 19682 fault code.
Test Operation
Crank the engine and monitor system voltage via the diagnostic tool or a multimeter to ensure it stays above the critical undervoltage threshold during the starting phase.
