Case IH 19699 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Set value of PCV not in plausibility range

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) is commanding a specific fuel pressure setpoint, but the actual fuel rail pressure or the electrical feedback from the Pressure Control Valve (PCV) is outside the expected (plausible) range, indicating a discrepancy between commanded and actual pressure.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Tier 4B engine models
  • Puma series
  • Maxxum series
  • Vestrum series
  • Farmall series

Check the cause

  1. Check the low-pressure fuel circuit (lift pump, fuel lines, and filters) for restrictions or starvation.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the PCV on the high-pressure pump for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

  3. Verify that the fuel rail pressure sensor is reading accurately and not sending incorrect pressure data to the ECM.

  4. Check for internal high-pressure fuel leaks, such as a leaking pressure relief valve on the fuel rail or excessive injector return flow.

Repair steps

  1. Replace Fuel Filters

Replace the primary and secondary fuel filters, bleed the fuel system of all air, and test the machine under load to see if the code clears.

  2. Repair Wiring

If wiring damage is found at the PCV connector, repair the harness, clear the codes, and retest.

  3. Replace the PCV

If the low-pressure supply is verified good, no leaks are present, and the wiring is intact, remove the PCV from the high-pressure fuel pump and install a new one.

  4. Reset Adaptations

After replacing the PCV, use an electronic service tool (like CNH EST) to clear the fault codes and reset the EEPROM learning data/adaptations for the new valve.

  5. Further Action

If the fault persists after PCV replacement, the high-pressure fuel pump may have internal wear and require replacement, or the fuel rail pressure sensor may be faulty.
