Case IH 19701 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Maximum rail pressure exceeded
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has determined that the high-pressure common rail fuel system pressure is too high. The rail pressure is continuously monitored during active pressure control by the fuel metering unit. This fault triggers when the rail pressure exceeds a maximum safe pressure threshold while the high-pressure governor is operating in closed-loop control. It is often flagged as an "overrun detection" of the fuel metering unit.
Applies to these machines
2 machines- Tier 4b
- EDC Tier 3 and Tier 4a engines (such as the F5C engine series)
Check the cause
Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or CNH EASY tool to retrieve the exact DTCs and freeze-frame data.
Visually inspect the relevant engine harnesses and connectors (specifically to the fuel rail pressure sensor and fuel metering unit) for damage, bent pins, or dislocated pins.
Verify the fuel rail pressure sensor raw values to see if the signal is intermittent or shorted.
Repair steps
Turn the vehicle status to Key On, Engine Off.
Using the EST service tool, re-initialize the ECU and load the appropriate data-set for the specific engine type.
(Note: A call to CNH Technical Support (TSS) may be required to get an authorization code for the ECU initialization download.)
Cycle the system and check to see if the fault code has cleared.
If the fault code does not clear after a software re-initialization and harness inspection, replace the ECU.
The manual dictates replacing the ECU if the issue persists.
If the issue is mechanical rather than electronic, replace the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor or the Fuel Metering Unit.
Standard common rail diagnostics dictate replacing these components for mechanical issues.
