Case IH 19705 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC): Minimum rail pressure failed

Issue description

The common rail fuel pressure has dropped below the minimum threshold required by the engine to allow fuel injection or sustain engine operation. When this occurs, the engine will typically experience a hard start, a no-start condition, or a severe loss of power.

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the tank has adequate fuel and check for water or severe contamination in the fuel/water separator

  2. Check the fuel lines for external leaks, kinks, or places where air could be drawn into the system

  3. Check the primary and secondary filters for restriction or blockages, as this is the most common cause of low rail pressure

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the fuel rail pressure sensor for chafing in the protective sheath or loose/corroded connectors

  5. Perform an injector return flow (leak-off) test to check for worn injectors leaking excessive fuel back to the return line

  6. Verify that the low-pressure supply pump is feeding the high-pressure pump correctly, and test the high-pressure pump's output and pressure relief valve

Repair steps

  1. Replace Fuel Filters

    Begin by replacing both the primary fuel filter (water separator) and the secondary spin-on fuel filter. This resolves the majority of low-pressure faults.

  2. Bleed the System

    Prime and bleed the fuel system completely to ensure no air is trapped in the lines.

  3. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a loose connector or chafed wire at the rail pressure sensor, repair the harness.

  4. Replace Faulty Components

    If the leak-off test fails, replace the faulty Fuel Injector(s). If the rail pressure sensor is skewed or reporting incorrectly despite good mechanical pressure, replace the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor. If the high-pressure pump cannot generate pressure, replace the High-Pressure Fuel Pump or Fuel Metering Unit.

  5. Clear Codes & Test

    Use a diagnostic tool to clear code 19705 and run the machine under load to verify the rail pressure meets the ECU's target parameters.
