Case IH 19708 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC): Monitoring for pressure loss in the high pressure accumulator (rail test)

Issue description

The engine control system has detected an unexpected drop in fuel pressure within the high-pressure common rail (the "accumulator"). This typically points to a fuel leak (either internal or external), a failing high-pressure pump, or a faulty sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the high-pressure fuel pump, common rail, and all high-pressure injector lines for external diesel leaks

  2. Check the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) for internal leaks by feeling the rubber return hose; if it is warm or if fuel flows out while the engine is running, the PRV is stuck open

  3. Perform an injector return flow test by disconnecting the injector return line at the cylinder head to check for excessive fuel flow, which indicates failing injectors

  4. Test the Fuel Control Valve (FCV/MPROP) on the high-pressure pump to ensure it is responding to PWM signals from the ECM

  5. Verify the fuel rail pressure sensor is not reading out of calibration, which could falsely trigger the pressure loss code

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

    Turn off the engine, disconnect the negative battery cable, and wait several minutes for the high-pressure fuel system to naturally depressurize.

  2. Clean the Work Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the fuel rail, PRV, injectors, and high-pressure lines to prevent dirt from entering the open fuel system.

  3. Replace the Faulty Component

    If the PRV is leaking: Remove the PRV from the fuel rail and install a new one (or replace the entire fuel rail assembly if the PRV is not serviced separately). If an injector is leaking: Remove the high-pressure line, hold-down clamp, and the faulty injector. Install the new injector with new copper sealing washers. If the sensor is faulty: Unplug the electrical connector and unthread the rail pressure sensor. Install the new sensor.

  4. Torque to Spec

    Torque all high-pressure fuel lines, sensors, and hold-downs to the exact OEM specifications found in your service manual.

  5. Prime the System

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position (without starting) to allow the electric lift pump to prime the low-pressure side of the fuel system and bleed out air.

  6. Test and Clear Codes

    Start the engine and inspect closely for leaks. Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 19708 / 3995 fault code and verify that target rail pressure is achieved under load.
