Case IH 19720 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Maximum rail pressure exceeded

The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) continuously monitors the fuel rail pressure. If the ECU determines that the fuel pressure has exceeded the maximum safe limit (e.g., spiking over 2250 bar / 32,625 psi) during operation, it logs this fault. This is almost always caused by a stuck or failing Fuel Metering Unit (also known as an M-Prop valve) on the high-pressure fuel pump, which fails to regulate the fuel volume entering the pump, causing a massive pressure spike in the common rail.

   Check the Fuel Metering Unit (M-Prop): The metering valve on the high-pressure fuel pump can stick mechanically, causing over-pressure. Disconnect the connector and check the resistance of the Fuel Metering Unit with a multimeter. The specification is typically between 2.1 to 4.0 ohms (or 2.6 - 3.2 ohms depending on the exact engine model).

   Wiring Harness Inspection: Check the wiring harness and connectors to the Fuel Metering Unit for a short circuit to the battery, a short to ground, or an open circuit.

   Check the Fuel Pressure Relief Valve (PRV): Located on the common rail. If the rail pressure exceeded the maximum limit, the mechanical relief valve is forced open to protect the system. Once it "pops" to relieve pressure, it often stays open or leaks, preventing fuel pressure from building properly afterward.

   Check the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor: Ensure the sensor is not outputting an intermittent raw value or a voltage higher than expected, which could falsely trigger the code.

   Depressurize the System

   Turn off the engine and allow the high-pressure fuel system to fully depressurize before opening any lines. Warning: High-pressure fuel can cause severe injury.

   Inspect Connections

   Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the Fuel Metering Unit (on the high-pressure pump) and the Rail Pressure Sensor. Repair any damaged wires or corroded pins.

   Test the Metering Unit

   Test the Fuel Metering Unit resistance with a multimeter across pins 1 and 2. If the resistance is out of specification, replace the Fuel Metering Unit.

   Replace the Metering Unit

   If the metering unit is mechanically stuck open (causing the over-pressure) or fails the resistance test, remove it from the high-pressure fuel pump and install a new one.

   Inspect/Replace the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV)

   Inspect the Fuel Pressure Relief Valve on the fuel rail. Because the system over-pressurized, the relief valve likely opened. It is usually a one-time or limited-use safety device. If it is leaking fuel back to the return line under normal cranking pressure, replace the Fuel Pressure Relief Valve.

   Clear Codes

   Clear the fault codes using the diagnostic tool (EASy tool or PT-Box).

   Verify Repair

   Run the engine and monitor the actual vs. desired fuel rail pressure to ensure the new metering unit is regulating pressure correctly and there are no leaks.
