Case IH 19726 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Maximum rail pressure exceeded (second stage)
Issue description
Severe overpressure condition within the high-pressure common rail fuel system. The engine's control system has detected that the fuel rail pressure has spiked beyond the maximum safe operating limit (second stage), which is often caused by a malfunctioning fuel metering unit supplying too much fuel, or a restriction in the fuel return lines.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- Tier 4b
- Case 570NXT
- SR220
- SR250
- SV250
- SV300
- TR320
- TV380
Check the cause
Check for accompanying fuel metering unit codes (e.g., short to battery, short to ground, or PWM power stage faults) which indicate an electrical failure of the metering unit.
Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the Fuel Metering Unit (M-PROP) and the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.
Monitor live data for the rail pressure sensor raw values while cranking or running to check if the pressure drop rate is higher than expected or if the sensor voltage is erratic.
Inspect the mechanical Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) on the fuel rail to see if it has been forced open and is constantly leaking fuel back into the return line.
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Turn off the engine and allow the high-pressure fuel system to fully depressurize before opening any lines. Warning: High-pressure fuel can cause severe injury.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If diagnostic checks revealed a short or open circuit in the fuel metering unit harness, repair the wiring and clear the codes.
Replace the Fuel Metering Unit
If the wiring is intact but the metering unit is sticking open (causing the overpressure condition), remove and replace the fuel metering unit on the high-pressure fuel pump.
Replace the Fuel Pressure Relief Valve (PRV)
Because the system reached "second stage" maximum pressure, the mechanical relief valve on the fuel rail has likely been compromised. Remove the old PRV from the common rail and install a new one, torquing it to the exact OEM specification.
Clear and Retest
Clear the fault codes from the EDC memory. Start the engine and monitor the live fuel rail pressure to ensure it is regulating properly and the code does not return.
